The Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, Energy, Water and Forestry conducted the Public Participation exercise on the Kakamega County Climate Change Bill, 2020.
The forum brought together citizens and stakeholders on matters environment from all the 60 Wards.
The Bill, establishes a framework for facilitating and co-ordinating Climate Change Governance,Mitigation, Adaption and Farming.
The law provides that the public shall be involved in the process of legislation, determining and prioritizing development plans and projects as well as on governance issues.
If the Bill is approved by the House to make it a county legislation,it will enable the county government:
1. Mainstream climate change programs into development planning decision, making and advisory on climate change in the county.
2. Co-ordinate ,collate and disseminate information on climate change to the
public to create and awareness and preparedness and
3. Establish a climate change fund, financial mechanism and governance
framework for climate change response and risk mitigation.
The day long public hearing on the Bill, was held at the Kakamega County Assembly Hall.
